About the Arista 400G QSFP-DD DR4 Optical Transceiver

The Arista QSFP-DD-400G-DR4 is a 400 Gigabit Ethernet optical transceiver built in the QSFP-DD (Quad Small Form-factor Double Density) form factor, delivering 400GbE connectivity over single-mode fiber using four parallel lanes of 100G PAM4 signaling. Each lane operates at 106.25 Gbps and is mapped across a four-fiber pair arrangement compliant with the IEEE 802.3bs 400GBASE-DR4 standard, enabling structured cabling runs of up to 500 meters over OS2 single-mode fiber with an MPO-12 connector interface. The module integrates digital diagnostics monitoring (DDM/DOM) for real-time visibility into optical power levels, temperature, voltage, and bias current, supporting proactive fault isolation in large-scale fabric deployments.

Designed for deployment in Arista 7800, 7500R3, 7280R3, and 7060X series platforms, this transceiver is purpose-built for high-density spine-leaf architectures where rack space, power budget, and signal integrity are critical constraints. The QSFP-DD form factor supports two rows of electrical contacts, doubling port density relative to standard QSFP28 cages while maintaining backward mechanical compatibility with QSFP+ and QSFP28 modules through appropriate host adapter support. Operating on 3.3 V with a typical power consumption in the range of 8–10 W, it meets the thermal requirements of high-port-count line cards without requiring extraordinary cooling accommodations.

The DR4 variant is particularly suited to intra-data-center interconnects where parallel single-mode fiber infrastructure already exists or is being deployed as part of a structured cabling refresh. Unlike FR4 or LR4 variants that rely on wavelength-division multiplexing, the DR4 uses a direct parallel fiber approach, simplifying optical path management and reducing latency introduced by MUX/DEMUX components. This makes the QSFP-DD-400G-DR4 a practical choice for ultra-low-latency east-west traffic patterns typical of AI/ML training clusters, distributed storage fabrics, and high-frequency financial trading backbones.

Ideal for

  • Spine-to-leaf interconnects in large-scale Clos fabric upgrades requiring 400GbE uplinks over structured single-mode parallel fiber cabling plants
  • AI and machine learning GPU cluster interconnects where east-west bandwidth density and low forwarding latency across the fabric are primary design requirements
  • High-performance distributed storage network backbones connecting NVMe-oF or all-flash array front-end ports to aggregation switches at 400G line rate
  • Financial services data center fabrics where deterministic low-latency switching and high-port-density 400GbE optics support co-located trading infrastructure
  • Intra-data-center point-of-delivery (POD) interconnects in hyperscale or enterprise private cloud builds where parallel SMF infrastructure supports sub-500m reach requirements
  • Network disaggregation and white-box or merchant-silicon switch deployments requiring IEEE 802.3bs-compliant 400GBASE-DR4 optics with standard MPO-12 interface compatibility
