Windows Server 2025 Standard Edition (16-core license)

Windows Server 2025 Standard Edition is Microsoft's mainstream server operating system released in November 2024, designed for physical and lightly virtualized environments across enterprise and mid-market organizations. Built on the same kernel foundation as Windows 11 24H2, it introduces enhanced security capabilities including Secured-core server support, improved credential protection via VBS (Virtualization-Based Security), and SMB over QUIC for secure file access without VPN dependency. This 16-core license covers one physical server with up to two OSEs (Operating System Environments) — either two Hyper-V virtual machines or one physical instance — making it the appropriate Standard-tier entry point for general-purpose workloads.

The release brings meaningful infrastructure advances including support for NVMe over TCP storage, GPU partitioning improvements for remote desktop scenarios, and native support for hotpatching (with Azure Arc enrollment) to reduce planned maintenance windows. Active Directory gains updated functional levels, Kerberos improvements, and delegated Managed Service Account (dMSA) enhancements. The OS supports up to 48 TB of RAM and 2,048 logical processors per server, positioning it for demanding roles such as domain services, file services, and application hosting without requiring Datacenter Edition licensing.

Windows Server 2025 Standard Edition is licensed under Microsoft's core-based model, requiring a minimum of 16 cores per server (8 cores per physical processor, minimum 2 processors covered). Additional core licenses must be added in 2-core packs for servers exceeding 16 physical cores. Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required separately for each user or device accessing server roles such as file services, Remote Desktop Services, or Active Directory. The product qualifies for Microsoft's Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC), with mainstream support extending through October 2029 and extended support through October 2034.
