About the Synology Active Backup for Business Suite

Synology Active Backup for Business is a centralised, license-free backup suite integrated into Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), designed to protect heterogeneous enterprise environments from a single management console. The platform consolidates protection for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines, physical Windows and Linux servers, personal computers running Windows or macOS, and file servers including SMB shares and rsync endpoints. All backup tasks are orchestrated through the Active Backup for Business Portal, a unified web-based interface that provides a single pane of glass for monitoring job status, storage consumption, recovery point objectives, and restoration workflows across all protected workload types.

The software leverages a suite of advanced data-reduction technologies to minimise storage footprint on the Synology NAS. Global deduplication operates across all backup versions and all protected sources simultaneously, ensuring that identical data blocks are stored only once regardless of which device or VM produced them. This is complemented by incremental-forever backup scheduling, which transfers only changed data blocks after the initial full backup, and variable-length block-level deduplication that adapts to the data stream rather than using fixed block sizes. For virtual machine workloads, the platform integrates with VMware Changed Block Tracking (CBT) and Hyper-V Resilient Change Tracking (RCT) to further reduce transfer overhead. Continuous Data Protection (CDP) mode is available for VMware VMs, enabling recovery point intervals as short as fifteen seconds.

Active Backup for Business supports granular and full-system recovery scenarios across all workload types. VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines can be restored in place, to an alternate host, or verified using the integrated Virtual Machine Restoration Validation feature, which boots the VM in an isolated sandbox environment and captures a screenshot to confirm successful startup without requiring a production outage. Physical servers benefit from bare-metal restore capability via a bootable recovery media wizard. Endpoint devices support file-level and full-system restore, and the self-service Portal allows end users to recover their own files independently without administrator intervention. The entire suite runs as a free package installable on supported Synology NAS appliances running DSM 6.2 or later, with no per-seat or per-workload software fees.

Ideal for

  • Consolidating VM backup for mixed VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments onto a single on-premises Synology NAS with global deduplication reducing storage growth
  • Protecting physical Windows and Linux production servers with bare-metal restore capability and bootable recovery media to meet aggressive RTO targets following hardware failure
  • Providing centralised endpoint backup for distributed enterprise workforces running Windows and macOS, with a self-service web portal enabling users to restore their own files without helpdesk involvement
  • Implementing Continuous Data Protection for mission-critical VMware VMs to achieve recovery points as granular as fifteen seconds, minimising data loss exposure for transactional workloads
  • Automating backup verification through scheduled Virtual Machine Restoration Validation jobs that boot protected VMs in an isolated environment and capture proof-of-recoverability screenshots for compliance reporting
  • Backing up SMB file server shares and rsync sources from network-attached servers and NAS devices into a deduplicated repository alongside VM and endpoint data under unified monitoring
