NetApp ONTAP 9.16 is the latest major release of NetApp's industry-leading unified data management operating system, designed to run on AFF (All Flash FAS), FAS, and ONTAP Select software-defined storage platforms as well as Cloud Volumes ONTAP deployments across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. The architecture delivers a single consistent data management layer spanning on-premises NVMe-based flash arrays, hybrid storage, and public cloud object storage, enabling enterprises to operate a unified storage fabric without separate management silos. ONTAP 9.16 introduces enhanced autonomous ransomware protection (ARP) powered by machine learning, extended AI/ML workload optimization, and deeper integration with cloud tiering services including FabricPool enhancements for automated data movement between performance tiers and low-cost object storage.

ONTAP 9.16 supports all major enterprise storage protocols simultaneously on the same platform, including NFS (v3/v4/v4.1), SMB/CIFS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel (FC), FCoE, and NVMe/FC and NVMe/TCP for high-performance modern workloads. The software delivers storage efficiency through inline deduplication, compression, compaction, and thin provisioning, all operating without impact to production I/O. SnapMirror replication provides synchronous and asynchronous data protection with RPO of zero for business-critical applications, while SnapVault and Cloud Backup Service extend protection copies to on-premises secondary and cloud targets.

The release strengthens multi-tenancy and security postures with expanded Zero Trust capabilities, including immutable Snapshot copies using SnapLock Compliance, multi-admin verification (MAV) requiring dual-administrator approval for destructive operations, and FIPS 140-2 validated encryption at rest and in flight. ONTAP 9.16 is managed through ONTAP System Manager (browser-based GUI), the NetApp ONTAP REST API, NetApp BlueXP for hybrid cloud orchestration, and Ansible/Terraform automation integrations, making it well suited for DevOps-driven and traditional enterprise IT environments alike.
