About the Extreme Networks ExtremeSwitching 5420F-48P-4XE Switch

The Extreme Networks ExtremeSwitching 5420F-48P-4XE is a 1U fixed-configuration gigabit access switch purpose-built for enterprise wiring closets requiring high-density Power over Ethernet and flexible stacking. It delivers 48 PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) copper ports alongside 4 x 10GbE SFP+ uplinks, providing a 740 W total PoE power budget to support demanding endpoint populations including IP phones, 802.11ax access points, IP cameras, and IoT devices. The platform is managed through Extreme Networks' ExtremeCloud IQ cloud management system or via on-premises ExtremeCloud IQ - Site Engine, enabling zero-touch provisioning, AI-driven analytics, and unified policy enforcement across distributed campus deployments.

The 5420F series employs a Virtual Switching Framework (VSF) stacking architecture, allowing multiple units to be logically combined into a single management domain using the 10GbE SFP+ uplink ports, simplifying operations and increasing resilience without dedicated stacking cables or modules. The switch supports full Layer 2 switching capabilities including 802.1Q VLANs, RSTP/MSTP, LACP, and 802.1X port-based Network Access Control, as well as Layer 3 features including static routing and RIP, making it suitable for environments that require distributed IP forwarding at the access layer.

Designed for long-term enterprise deployments, the 5420F-48P-4XE carries a fanless or fan-cooled thermal design appropriate for its power class, operates on an ExtremeXOS network operating system renowned for its stability and hitless software upgrade capability, and supports granular QoS classification and marking to prioritize latency-sensitive traffic such as voice and video. Its combination of cloud-native management, robust PoE capacity, and scalable stacking makes it a consistent choice for IT teams standardizing access-layer infrastructure across multi-site campus networks.

Ideal for

  • High-density IP telephony and unified communications deployments where each desk phone requires PoE+ power and QoS prioritization across a converged access layer
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E campus rollouts supplying reliable 802.3at PoE+ power and 10GbE uplinks to ceiling-mounted access points in open-plan offices or lecture halls
  • IP surveillance and physical security infrastructure powering PTZ cameras and door-access controllers while enforcing network segmentation via 802.1X and VLAN policies
  • Enterprise wiring closet consolidation using VSF stacking to manage multiple 5420F units as a single logical switch, reducing management overhead across multi-floor or multi-building deployments
  • IoT and smart-building integration connecting BACnet controllers, environmental sensors, and digital signage endpoints under centralized ExtremeCloud IQ policy and visibility
  • Distributed campus standardization programs where IT requires a common access-layer platform with cloud-managed zero-touch provisioning for rapid site bring-up without on-site engineering visits
