About the Dell EMC PowerScale F710

The Dell EMC PowerScale F710 is an all-flash storage node for the PowerScale scale-out NAS platform, which runs Dell's OneFS distributed file system. The F710 targets workloads that require extremely high sequential throughput and low latency NFS/S3 access—particularly AI/ML training data pipelines, high-performance EDA (electronic design automation), and large-scale video production environments. Each F710 node adds NVMe-backed capacity and performance linearly to the cluster as it scales.

OneFS, the operating system underlying the PowerScale platform, presents all nodes in a cluster as a single unified namespace accessible via NFS v3/v4.1, SMB 3.x, S3, HDFS, and HTTP. This eliminates the need to manage disparate storage silos for AI data lakes and enables GPU training servers to ingest data at wire speed from a single mountpoint regardless of how many petabytes the cluster spans. The F710 node achieves up to 120GB/s of sequential read throughput per node and can be clustered into systems delivering exabytes of capacity.

The PowerScale F710 integrates with Dell's APEX file storage services for a consumption-based model, and with CloudIQ for proactive health monitoring. Data protection in OneFS uses erasure coding (N+M protection) rather than traditional RAID, distributing parity across all nodes and drives so that protection overhead scales efficiently as nodes are added. The F710 is complemented by capacity-optimized nodes (H and A series) in the same cluster to implement a cost-effective hot/warm data tiering strategy.

Ideal for

  • AI/ML training data lake providing high-throughput NFS to GPU clusters
  • Genomics sequencing data primary storage and processing
  • High-performance electronic design automation (EDA) scratch storage
  • Video post-production shared storage for 4K/8K workflows
  • Petabyte-scale unstructured data analytics (Hadoop/Spark via HDFS)
  • S3-compatible object/file converged storage for modern application data
