About the Juniper 400G QSFP-DD FR4 Transceiver

The Juniper 400G QSFP-DD FR4 Transceiver (JNP-QSFP-DD-400G-FR4) is a high-density optical module engineered for 400 Gigabit Ethernet transmission over single-mode fiber using four wavelengths in the 1310 nm O-band region. Built on the FR4 (Far Reach 4-lane) optical architecture, the module leverages PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4) signal encoding across four 100G lanes to achieve aggregate 400G throughput, supporting reach up to 2 km on standard OS2 single-mode fiber. The QSFP-DD (Quad Small Form-factor pluggable Double Density) form factor provides backward mechanical compatibility with QSFP ports where supported, while enabling the electrical interface density required for next-generation spine and core deployments.

Designed for native integration with Juniper's PTX Series packet transport routers and QFX Series data center switches, this transceiver operates with Junos OS and is fully recognized within Juniper's optical management framework, enabling coherent monitoring of Tx/Rx optical power, temperature, and lane-level diagnostics through standard DDMI (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring Interface). The module conforms to IEEE 400GBASE-FR4 and QSFP-DD MSA specifications, ensuring interoperability within standards-compliant 400G fabric architectures. Its O-band WDM approach avoids the chromatic dispersion penalties associated with C-band transmission at this reach, eliminating the need for dispersion compensation elements on sub-2 km spans.

The JNP-QSFP-DD-400G-FR4 has seen rising adoption in data center interconnect (DCI) scenarios where operators require high-capacity, low-latency links between geographically adjacent facilities, as well as within large-scale spine-leaf fabrics demanding 400G port density without the complexity or power overhead of coherent DWDM solutions. Its combination of reach, power efficiency relative to coherent alternatives, and native Juniper platform support makes it a practical building block for backbone capacity scaling in carrier, cloud, and enterprise core networks.

Ideal for

  • Data center interconnect (DCI) over intra-campus or metro single-mode fiber spans up to 2 km between co-located or adjacent facilities
  • 400G spine-to-spine links in large-scale leaf-spine fabrics built on Juniper QFX Series switches requiring high port density
  • PTX Series core router peering links where 400G capacity is required on short-haul single-mode fiber infrastructure
  • Network backbone upgrades migrating from 100G aggregated links to native 400G interfaces to reduce port count and operational complexity
  • Cloud and carrier neutral facility (CNF) cross-connect deployments requiring standards-compliant 400GBASE-FR4 optical interfaces
  • High-capacity aggregation layer interconnects in enterprise or service provider networks where coherent optics would introduce unnecessary cost and power overhead for sub-2 km reaches
