The Cisco QSFP-400G-ZR-S is a 400G coherent DWDM transceiver designed for long-reach data center interconnect (DCI) and carrier Ethernet applications. It implements coherent DSP technology to enable transmission over extended distances on a single wavelength, eliminating the need for inline optical amplification in many deployment scenarios.
This transceiver operates across the C-band DWDM spectrum with integrated tunable laser capability, supporting flexible grid wavelength assignment. The ZR-S variant is optimized for cost-effective long-haul connectivity while maintaining the coherent signal processing required for 400G line-rate performance.
The module interfaces via standard QSFP-DD form factor, enabling integration into existing modular optics platforms. Supply constraints driven by limited DWDM DSP chip availability have characterized the market since its 2022 launch, with constraints expected to persist through 2025–2026.
